General Description

The Director, Adult and Community Education manages the strategic direction, design and operation of the College’s non-credit adult basic education (ABE), high school equivalency (GED/HiSET) programs and the English as a Second Language (ESL) Institute. Reporting to the Dean, this position provides leadership in the coordination, planning, implementation and assessment of adult education programs and initiatives, as well as other non-credit and lifelong learning/personal enrichment offerings within the division.

Specific Responsibilities

• Provide instructional and administrative leadership to the ABE and High School Equivalency (GED/HiSET) programs and the ESL Institute; developing program design and curriculum, and managing day-to-day operational details of the program.

• Plan and coordinate program related activities at the College’s Main and regional locations, and at various community based organizations (CBO).

• In collaboration with the Dean, develop appropriate program goals, and maintain records of program activities and outcomes for ongoing assessment and improvement.

• Develop and maintain the ABE, High School Equivalency (GED/HiSET) and ESL Institute master schedule of classes.

• Manage temporary staff at various community based organizations (CBO) in the local area and the College’s regional centers.

• In collaboration with the Assistant Dean, manage the selection, placement and evaluation processes for program instructors.

• Collaborate with College faculty to identify appropriate curriculum for adult education academic programs and determine which standardized assessment tools are appropriate for the relevant adult education programs.

• Coordinate and plan (and in some instances, deliver) staff development activities and training.

• Monitor the budget and expenditures for all programs, and submit annual budget projections for all programs to the Dean.

• Manage processes related to student assessment and registration, and textbook and instructional materials purchase and distribution for all programs, in collaboration with relevant College departments.

• Evaluate new instructional material and technology and recommend needed adjustments for optimal program operation and student outcomes.

• Design and develop students’ assessment tools to ascertain accuracy of program outcomes meet quality and accountability standards.

• Design develop, and manage new non-credit offerings, and collaborate with the Dean in establishing appropriate program goals and targets.

• As appointed by the Dean, serve on various appropriate and relevant committees and work teams inside and outside of the College.

• Review, analyze and evaluate program data (i.e. registration, enrollment, attendance, completion, etc.) for annual reporting, planning and improvement.

• Deliver quality customer services to both internal and external constituents in a professional helpful and courteous manner.

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Education, Adult Education, Higher Education Administration or related field required. Any and all degree(s) must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

• Minimum of three (3) years of related work experience required.

• Minimum of two (2) years’ of supervisory experience required.

• Demonstrated knowledge of adult education theory, models and programs as it pertains to ABE, high school equivalency and ESL/ELL student populations required.

• Detail-oriented with excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with people of diverse backgrounds required.

• Ability to work independently and take initiative required.

• Ability to create, implement and monitor systems, procedures and processes required.

• Exceptional organizational, problem-solving and planning skills required.

• Ability to collaborate with others required.

• Experience utilizing an enterprise-wide information and reporting system required.

• Ability to maintain sensitivity, understanding and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of two (2) years’ experience supervising secondary or post-secondary instructional staff is preferred.

• Previous teaching experience preferred.

• Teacher or principal certification preferred.

• Experience in curriculum design and evaluation in an adult education setting preferred.

• Banner experience preferred.

• Experience using the Danielson framework for teaching in the classroom and/or as an instructional evaluation tool preferred.

• Experience working in a collective bargaining environment with collective bargaining agreements preferred.

• Bilingual language skills preferred.
